The Worsening Water Crisis

The World Economic Forum announced back in 2015 that the water crisis was the #1 global risk based on impact to society (as a measure of devastation). Now in 2017 the crisis has not gotten better, in fact it continues to get worse in many parts of the developing world. Over 1 billion people are without access to safe water, particularly in developing countries. Bathing, washing clothes and water for consumption is frequently drawn from highly polluted rivers and streams. Many of these countries lack the proper infrastructure to safely manage wastewater and the means to separate wastewater from drinking water and 90% of wastewater is discharged into rivers and streams without treatment. A staggering 2.4 billion people are without access to proper sanitation.

As a result, around 1.6 million deaths are attributed to water pollution and poor sanitation every year. It is estimated over half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by people suffering from waterborne diseases. Many rural towns and villages of the developing world face challenges because of their lack of proximity to fresh clean water. Women in these villages are charged with the task of collecting water and in some cases travel over 4 miles to reach a water source. Sometimes these women are carrying over 20kgs of weight on their head to deliver water that of highly questionable quality. The WHO reports that over 40 billion work hours are lost in Africa each year through the process of fetching water.

We at Aqua Solutions Group are committed to the fight against the world water crisis. Make no mistake, it is a battle and it is one in which we are ill-equipped and undermanned. Governments of the world spend far more money and resources building their military than they do water infrastructure and wastewater management. Ironically, more people have died from water related disease than were lost in all military conflicts and all other forms of violence cumulatively since World War II.
